Drain clearing and unblocking

When your toilet is blocked or draining slowly, it is important to get it looked at and fixed by an experienced drainage operative. We understand that this is not a good experience and can leave nasty smells and odours in your home if left. It can also lead to other drainage issues, where sewage starts overflowing in your garden from the inspection chambers.

8 things you should never put down your drain:

1. Oils & fats

Once flushed down the drain, oils and fats can stick, build-up and eventually clog the system. As it cools, it hardens and becomes trickier to flush. Even if you do manage to flush it out of your drains, oils and grease can still cause blockages in sewers down the line as well.

2. Coffee grounds

Although you wouldn’t think it, coffee grounds don’t break down, they gather and stick together to form a thick paste. Once these go down the drain they will combine with grease, fat and other residues in the pipeline.

3. Large food waste

Large food waste items although do go down the sink waste, they can catch in the drains, build up and cause a blockage and will then start to become smelly. Always empty your sink strainer into the bin or make sure all food waste is scrapped off plates into the bin.

4. Soil

An area where people always think is good to repot house plants is in the kitchen sink as the water will drain the excess soil away. Which it does, but potting soil is a solid with a dense composition and it will clog drains. It can also contain compost, which can attract bugs and roaches to your drains.

5. Hair

Hair is one of the biggest blockages in the shower drain. If not removed, the hair can catch in the pipes and combined with soap residue, it will build up and clog the drain.

6. Cat litter

Whether you buy regular or flushable cat litter, it shouldn’t be flushed down the toilet. Regular litter expands in water and will quickly cause a blockage. Flushable litter doesn’t expand, but flushing too much too quickly can cause blockages further into the pipeline. Other problems with the litter is that it contains cat faeces and this is a problem for the water treatment centres as they cannot remove the bacteria.

7. Paper towels, cotton wool & ear buds

Although these items appear small, when immersed in water they swell and don’t break down like toilet paper. These then build up in the drain and cause blockages..

8. Feminine hygiene products

These products are designed to absorb liquid, once immersed in the drains these swell up and group together to cause blockages. They can also find their way into the water treatment process and end up polluting water systems.

Drain and sewer repair

Do you have regular blockages?

Is your water not flowing away?

Do you have bad smells from your drains?

If the answer to the above is yes, then you most likely have a broken drain or sewer pipe. It is critical that these are repaired as soon as possible.

Drain & Sewer Repair

What are the major causes of damage to drains and sewers?

1. Wear and tear

This is made worse by age and poor maintenance.

2. Tree roots

Over time, if tree roots are left, they will take over the pipework, making it impossible to unblock, and the pipeline will need to be removed and replaced

3. Rodents

As they can damage pipelines

4. Damage by a third party

This is mainly construction works, where drains have been hidden and not marked on drawings

5. Structural movement

This will lead to cracks and/or joint displacement

CCTV drain surveys

We carry out surveys regularly due to the age of drains within the King's Lynn area. These surveys provide us with a live feed from inside your drains, which allows us to see clearly what is happening and reveal the cause of your drainage issues.

CCTV Drain Surveys

They are also helpful in spotting issues before they become serious, such as:

Slight fracture in the drain

Root ingression

Scale build-up

They can also reveal many other issues inside your drains, such as:

Collapsed drains

Joint displacement

Corrosion or wear and tear

Detection of rodents in the drainage system

Drain inspection showing severe root intrusion

Once we have assessed the CCTV footage, we will produce a drain survey report with repair recommendations and costs

Depending on the problem found, we may be able to fix it there and then. If not, we will plan with you for any more major projects, such as collapsed drain repairs. Avoid potential problems early by having your drain surveyed. The earlier potential problems are detected, the easier and cheaper it will be to resolve.

Homebuyer surveys

When you want to purchase your dream property, there is always that underlying feeling about the drains. How do you know everything works underground, how it should be, when you cannot see it? This is an area that most people often forget about. Having a CCTV drain survey before purchasing your home can give you peace of mind that everything is working as it should, or we will provide you with any potential problems. We can work with you and the estate agent to arrange access to the property to carry out the drain survey. We will supply a full written report and provide our findings.

If you want to book this service, please call us on 01553 348164 to arrange. The cost depends on a number of factors, but we can provide an assessment by visiting the property to ascertain the costs. We will also provide a free quotation for any works we identify that need rectifying prior to your purchase.

Gutter and downpipe – cleaning, repairing and replacing

This is the process of removing debris from your home's gutters and downpipes. We carry out planned maintenance for our customers in both the commercial and domestic fields.

Gutter & Downpipe Clearing

Regular gutter and downpipe cleaning offers several benefits:

1. Prevents water damage

Clean gutters allow rainwater to flow freely, preventing overflow and water damage to your home's foundation, walls, and landscaping.

3. Extends lifespan

Regular cleaning reduces wear and tear and prolongs the life of your gutters and downpipes.

2. Avoids blockages

Removing debris like leaves and moss ensures that water flows smoothly through the gutters and downpipes, preventing clogs.

4. Prevents pest infestation

Clogged gutters can attract pests like mosquitoes, birds and rodents. Cleaning will help to keep these pests away.

How often should I clean my gutters?

We would recommend you keep regular maintenance to prevent clogs and water damage. Some general guidelines are:

Twice a year: it is recommended to clean gutters twice a year – once in the Spring and again in Autumn. These times are when you are more likely to get a build-up of leaves and moss.

More frequent – should your home be surrounded by trees; you might consider a more frequent cleaning schedule i.e. quarterly.

Inspect regularly – it is good to inspect gutters periodically for any signs of clogs or damage. If you address issues early on, this will avoid costly repairs later.

Drainage solutions

We pride ourselves on delivering a professional service to all our customers. Our expert drainage operatives are experienced in repairing underground pipes, installing new systems, and replacing or installing soakaways and ACO drains.

Drainage Solutions

Garden drainage is a growing issue in the UK as more and more houses are built on clay soil without consideration for water runoff

The answer to this issue is to create an easy path for the groundwater to flow so that the surface water can drain away. Over time, soil can become compacted and less permeable, resulting in much slower drainage from the surface. Below are some examples of work we have carried out to alleviate issues with garden drainage.

Soakaway crates

A soakaway area is a trench filled with shingle, on which the crates sit and are covered with a membrane. The soil is then placed back on top and normally covered with new grass seed.

Soil aeration

Using our borehole equipment, we can aerate the soil by boring holes, backfilling with membrane and shingle, and replacing the lawn on the pinnacle.
